Chris Pitts was announced as Danos’ 2019 Dwain “Hog” Carrell Field Employee of the Year during a virtual Field Leadership Summit on Thursday, July 30.

“I’m proud to have you as the 2019 Danos Field Employee of the Year,” said Owner Eric Danos to Chris during the announcement. “I’m proud to have you as a member of our team and of all the things you’ve accomplished along the way. You’re ‘tip of the spear,’ representing what lots of men and women do in the field in helping us live out our company purpose.”

Chris got his start in the industry working in project management, leading crews at his family’s contracting company. He gained experiencing preparing teams for large jobs, and he was also able to learn the business side of things, like paying taxes.

After a stint on a project in Delaware, Chris hired on as a rigger with Danos in 2005, so he could be closer to his family in Houma, Louisiana. Since then, Chris has demonstrated his openness to change and desire to improve by holding various positions. Currently, he serves as logistics lead on BP’s Thunder Horse platform in the Gulf of Mexico, a role he’s had for the last seven years. Chris says he appreciates the dynamics of his job.

“There are always challenges to fix,” he says. “Some of the day-to-day work is similar, but the challenges are always different.”

He also enjoys being able to help people and says his goal is to make employees comfortable; “I try to make others feel like they’re at home on the platform as much as possible.”

Special to life on Thunder Horse, Chris loves serving on the Gift of Giving team, an employee-run program on the rig that helps families who have fallen on hard times. Chris says this builds a family rapport among the different employees and companies who all come together to help those in need. They hold various fundraisers on the facility including raffles, bingo, card games and a vending machine with proceeds that go to Gift of Giving.

Helping others and giving back is something that is important to Chris. It is something he hopes to instill within his four children, three girls and a boy, ages 29, 22, 16 and 15.

“Chris is a trustworthy, honest and dedicated employee,” says General Manager of Production Services Mike Guidry. “He is constantly reminding me of how we should live our lives while at work and at home.”

Another coworker adds that Chris "has always been a great teacher to our crews."

When asked why he likes working for Danos, Chris says it starts with the leadership. Of his early days with Danos, he says, “I remember seeing Mr. Mike (Guidry) every day and wanting to mirror his professionalism. He planted a seed in the way he interacted with the customer, and I wanted to be like that.”

“Mr. Mike is tough,” he adds, “but I knew his expectations and didn’t want to fail.”

Chris says that there are many great people at Danos who have impacted his career, but Mark King, former BP account manager, has also played a huge role.

“We’re still close,” Chris says. “He’s a friend and mentor, and I can call and talk to him about anything.”

Another aspect that makes Danos special, according to Chris, is that the company does its best to treat everyone as a family, even though the number of employees has grown.

“The owners still make an effort to call and say thank you for your service on your anniversary or to wish you a happy birthday,” he says. “That really goes a long way.”
