Danos Secures Offshore Maintenance Contract with Shell

By: Kevin Biringer

In response to recent market conditions, Shell solicited bids for their mechanical and instrumentation and electrical services for all of their offshore Gulf of Mexico facilities, separating them into 2 regions (East/West). During the contracting process, Ram Powell and Perdido swapped regions.

Shell’s goal was to reduce the number of their offshore service providers, and gain efficiencies and cost savings by working across multiple facilities in the planning and execution of work. Shell utilized a rigorous three-round tendering process over a 7-month period to achieve this goal.

Danos was awarded a 3-year contract with a 2-year option for the mechanical and I&E maintenance services for the western region, which includes the Auger and Ram Powell tension leg platforms, the Enchilada and Salsa fixed leg platforms and the numerous subsea fields that tie back into these platforms.

Kenny Haas, Danos senior project manager, will serve as the transition lead working closely with Shell to ensure a seamless contract kickoff and transition of facilities. Kenny has worked with Shell in the Gulf of Mexico for 25 years, and joined the Danos automation group in January.

The contract will involve multiple Danos divisions with the estimated number of positions from each group in parenthesis:

  • Project Management (6)
  • Construction (58)
  • Automation (17)
  • Scaffolding (12)

Over the next several months, Danos will be working closely with Shell to develop and execute transition plans for the four awarded facilities with an offshore transition target completion date of Aug. 1, 2017.

This multi-year contract represents the latest chapter in the historic Danos Shell partnership. Danos and Shell have worked together uninterrupted for 46 years from our first project together at Bay Marchand in 1971, to current-day work with Shell Deepwater in the GoM, Shell Pipeline in the GoM and coastal areas and Shell Unconventionals in the Permian and Appalachia.

This is a major victory for Danos with a strategic customer in an ultra-competitive environment. This win will also position Danos for future wins with Shell in 2017 and beyond. Congrats to the many Danos team members who demonstrated all 6 high-performance traits throughout the 7-month tendering process in achieving this victory.
