From Jamaica to the Gulf

After joining Danos as a blaster painter in July 2017, Merick Chambers has quickly proven to be a leader within the coatings group. He is now the lead foreman over all Shell Pipeline Coatings projects for Danos. While there is not a one size fits all path to a career in coatings, Merick’s route is rather unconventional.

“Mediocrity has never been a part of my life,” said Merick. “My parents are hard workers from Jamaica, where we are taught that hard work and determination is the only way to succeed.”

Born in a small rural town in Jamaica, Merick moved to Kingston to attend the University of Jamaica. An athlete on the university’s basketball team, he earned a four-year degree in hospitality and tourism management, focusing on food service management. After graduating, he stayed in Kingston working as a customer service representative for a life insurance company for over three years.

Merick’s career trajectory changed in 2012 when friends introduced him to an opportunity in coatings. He moved to Louisiana to work for L&L in Eunice, and soon after he took a position at Waveland, where he stayed for four years. When he joined Danos, Merick recognized it was a good fit saying, “I realized I wanted to be at Danos because I liked the way they treated people.”

Supervisor Eric Berman and former supervisor Charles Kelly recognized his leadership potential and trained him as a relief foreman before his promotion to foreman in 2018. Merick has received certification in NACE Coatings Inspector Program Level 1 and is working on Level 2 certification. Additionally, he was qualified by a third-party institution to help oil and hazardous liquid pipeline operators comply with DOT 49 CFR 192 and 195 regulations.

Merick currently lives in Lafayette. He travels back to Kingston several times a year to visit his seven-year-old daughter, Neah Rae, and of course, he loves for her to visit him in Louisiana as well.

“My daughter is always looking up to me, so I am trying to teach her strong working values and attitudes, leading by example,” said Merick. “I am always trying to improve.”

“Merick invests his whole self into whatever it is he is doing,” said Coatings Manager Clay Carter. “He has tremendous work ethic and takes pride in learning not only how to hone his leadership skills but to also enhance his technical skills through a questioning attitude, which helps him better understand his business. He has been a great asset to our team, and we are glad to have him.”
