Human Performance

Recently, I attended a customer meeting focused on human performance. During that meeting, Dr. Todd Conklin taught a new method of thinking that I believe will change how we look at safety. I found myself absorbing it all, but not yet knowing how it all worked together. Dr. Conklin was "Mr. Miyagi" and I was the student painting the fence.

What is human performance?

Human performance

  • is a philosophical shift of thinking

  • is a journey that takes time

  • redefines safety…not the absence of incidents, but the presence of safeguards

  • expands our thinking from “why” to “how”

  • builds error tolerant defense systems

  • builds on our success and targets serious incident reduction and fatality prevention

Human performance is not

  • a program or a single process or standard

  • something that removes individual accountability

  • intended to be a silver bullet
