On Monday, June 7, Paul Danos announced Mary Perez as the 2020 Dwain “Hog” Carrell Field Employee of the Year during a dinner disguised as a “Meet and Greet” with the Danos leadership team. Danos leaders traveled from headquarters to join Danos employees and BP leadership for the celebratory dinner at The Fisherman’s Daughter near Ingleside, Texas.

A two-time finalist for the award, Mary was both surprised and humbled. “This is a great honor,” she said.

An 18-year Danos employee, Mary carries a wealth of industry knowledge. She has been working offshore for 37 years, but her career in oil and gas actually began when she was in high school. As a teenager growing up in Barataria, Louisiana, Mary spent summers participating in Texaco’s “Manpower Program,” where she worked at a Texaco rig. After graduating high school, she became a roustabout, then called “gophers,” at the age of 18.

Early in her career, Mary’s dad gave her advice that she took to heart. He said, “Whatever they ask you to do, do it the best.”

This advice steered Mary’s move into logistics as she became one of the firsts in this field. “That was before computers were a thing,” she says and adds that her career moved in that direction, “because no one else wanted to do it. I got ‘voluntold’ and learned as I went.”

Mary remembered her father’s advice as opportunities continued to come her way. She always took the next, better opportunity.

In 2009, the contract Mary was working on was switched to Danos, and she began working with then Account Manager Mike Guidry. She realized the company was a good match, and she has been with Danos ever since. “Where Danos went, Mary went,” she says.

“Mary is the real deal when it comes to logistics,” said General Manager Mike Guidry. “Not only has she helped others in logistics get where they are today through mentoring, but she has also been a strong role model, a leader and an amazing friend to her coworkers. She has shown what it takes to succeed and worked hard for what she has accomplished.”

As logistics coordinator, Mary currently works for BP on Argos/Mad Dog 2 at Ingleside, where she is prepping the facility to ship out. Mary loves that her job is never the same. “It keeps your mind going, plus you get to work with good people.”

“My mom told me, ‘If you find something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life,’ and I love my job,” said Mary.

Mary’s love of her job is evident, as she goes above and beyond to assist the customer, who has requested her by name multiple times.

Operations Manager Matt Kelso said, “In 2020, Mary received numerous praises from BP leadership from her job performance and commitment to excellence during the pandemic. She embodies the Danos Purpose, Vision and Values.”

When not working, you can find Mary either spending time with her two grandchildren, eight-year-old Zane and three-year-old Aubrie. Or you’ll find her fishing near Morgan City, where she lives with her wife Susan of 20 years. They have three daughters, ages 27, 24 and 19.

When asked what makes Danos a great place to work, Mary says, “They actually care about you. They check on you and visit with you at crew change. I love Danos.”

She also likes that the company and its people are honest. “I’ve never called with a question or issue that wasn’t resolved. You know where you stand. They respect me, and I respect them.” she says.

Mary’s respect for the company makes being named Field Employee of the Year that much more meaningful.

“I’m very honored to say that I work for Danos. It is a great company with great people. I’m proud to say I work for Danos and wear the Danos logo.”
