The Secret Sauce

When Paul Danos interviewed me 11 years ago, he told me the company had three main goals: Honor God, make money and have fun. In the business world, those are words one rarely comes across, but my personal values, work ethic and Danos’ were a perfect match. At that moment, I knew I was on board.

Charged with marketing and communications for the company, I’ve spent my entire career at Danos defining and promoting our unique culture. Danos is a special place to work and trying to figure out exactly what makes up our company ethos has been a part of that. The purpose, values, vision and high-performance traits aren’t an accident; they’re a definition. They define us as a team. They are part of what attracts people. They are the Danos difference.

Preserving our culture - we’re more than the work that we do.

I spend all of my working hours communicating our culture to employees, future employees, customers and the community. Our marketing team is always looking for the magic that’s happening around our worksites. (Field leaders used to call me the camera girl because I’d run around taking pictures of everything.) Since I’ve been here, we’ve grown from 600 employees to at one time over 3,000 employees. That’s a lot of activity to keep up with! One way to preserve our culture is to share examples of it in action using a variety of channels such as: Pipeline articles, field leader seminars, town halls, executive messages, weekly safety calls, JSEAs, W.A.T.C.H. cards, stop work authority, safety meetings…We preserve and strengthen our culture through every decision we make and in every action we take in our daily work.

Protecting our culture - communication is key.

With this pandemic and remote work situation, I’ve had more time to think about what I miss. Sometimes I miss my podcasts from my 2-hour daily commute. Sometimes it’s the luxuries of lunch and coffee being prepared for me. But without a doubt it’s the people and little interactions that I miss the most. I never thought I was big on small talk, but apparently, I am. I’ve had a lot of time to think about what exactly makes Danos a special place to work. It’s all these little family units spread across the country with shared purpose, values, vision and high-performance culture.

Keeping us connected and all on the same page will always be one of our biggest challenges, but knowing that is half the battle. We protect our culture through communication, and we all know that’s a two-way street. We preserve our culture through account managers, crew changes, field leader seminars, training workshops, the Danos Foundation, JSEAs, project kick-offs, safety audits, safety focus, weekly safety calls, newsletters, social media, and in our everyday work. So, stay engaged, participate and share your ideas, and let’s always spread the healthy virus of our culture.

Grab your phones, take a moment to send us photos or videos of your work-family units, and we’ll do something special with them. Get creative. Surprise us, and we’ll package them up and surprise you! Send to whatsup@danos.com by July 13.

Great job on this article Nicole. The Danos culture is one of our greatest assets. Like other important assets, we are intentional about how we protect it, improve it, and use it to accomplish our purpose.

Well said Nicole. When the smiles around the office ignite through the mask, you know you are in a good work environment. And I love the crescent wrench picture!

Nicole, I just want to say I enjoyed your article on Protecting our Culture through Communication. Being new to Danos I have been noticing the special little things that help make Danos a great place to work; no that's wrong, it is a "great place to belong" because of people like you who go the extra mile in helping Danos have that special culture. Because of the current health and market environments life in the oil and gas industry is very challenging but knowing there many people just like you at Danos gives us faith that we will prevail and perhaps become even stronger because of our caring for one another culture. Thanks again for you article and I am looking forward having lunch with you and the others hopefully in the near future.
